The past few weeks Luke has been really funny about diapers. He would cry sometimes when I changed him and sometimes he would start pulling on them trying to remove it. I thought that he was just trying to itch a few little bug bites that he had on his lower abdomen, but I talked with a friend and she said that maybe I should take it as a sign that he's about ready to start potty-training. We've had a little potty for about 5 months now. Before or after baths I would let Luke sit on it. Sometimes he would and sometimes he wouldn't, and usually it was just a little sit for a second then off he went onto better things.
Two days ago, we set Luke onto the potty and he stayed! Then the miracle happened. Of course, he got lots of loves, claps, and a cookie. Yesterday, he peed in it 5 different times-getting a reward at each time. Okay, here's the dilemma, last night he was able to use the potty, but when it came time to put a diaper on he had a fit! He was wanting potty and candy! Oh dear. I want to reinforce using the potty. I know many of you have been through this process. Do you have any advice?
Thanks.

This may be too late, but we are going through this now. I decided I needed to be super dedicated and slow down my schedule to help my little guy potty train.
Every where I've read "they" say kids do need an instant reward (whatever works for them--if you don't want him to have candy maybe you can figure something else out). I thought we'd be fine if we just made a big deal of it--but no dice. Then I thought if we did a sticker sheet where he'd get a treat after so many that would be good. That worked a little better, but it wasn't instant enough so I resorted to a couple of m&m's each time he pooped or peed in the potty. Like magic. He still get his sticker sheet with a reward after going pee ten times and poop seven times (a car) and a treat. We've only been doing this a week and a half and now he can hold it about two hours which is awesome.
The first day he didn't get it and so he had no diaper or underpants on until he realized he had nothing to pee into. Then the next couple of days he had a few accidents and now he hasn't had an accident in a few days. Naps and all day I keep him in underwear, but nighttime I use pull-ups (most nights he keeps them dry). I remind him before bed that he needs to go potty as soon as he wakes up and I try to get to him when he stirs in the morning to make sure he gets on the potty.
I also set the timer for every half hour initially to tell him it was time to potty--then I lengthened the time out as I thought he could go longer. That's what's working for us! I figure after about another week he won't need a treat or prizes anymore. I'll end it with something fun--that says he's a big boy and doesn't need those incentives now (hopefully). Good-luck.
